Vintage Linoleum Assemblage Paintings

Paper or Plastic, 2008, vintage linoleum assemblage, 24" x 32"

Bill Miller makes collage paintings from discarded linoleum and reclaimed vinyl flooring, creating an effect that lies somewhere between collage and stained glass. Miller’s work has been recognized for rendering narrative moods and a sense of common memory. His unexpected use of patterns taps into the mediums nostalgic familiarity striving to import a sense of history and story within each piece. Miller began working with recycled materials as a founding member of Pittsburgh’s Industrial arts Co-op constructing large-scale sculptures made of scrap materials in abandoned industrial sites. His work has been featured in the New York Times, HOME Magazine, the Chicago Tribune and on the National Geographic Channel. He has been working exclusively in vintage linoleum for 12 years and has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries in New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Diego, New Orleans and Austin.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

AN EXHIBITION OF VINTAGE LINOLEUM COLLAGE PAINTING FROM ARTIST BILL MILLER OPENS AT FRANK PICTURES GALLERY AT BERGAMOT STATION APRIL 26.

Bill Miller, who makes collage paintings from discarded vintage linoleum, opens his Los Angeles solo show at the Frank Pictures Gallery at Bergamot Station on April 26th. Miller finds inspiration from the material, cutting up shards of old flooring and bonding them on wooden boards with industrial-strength construction glue, and then layering them with varnish to create a mosaic effect that lies somewhere between collage and stained glass. Miller’s work has been recognized for rendering narrative moods and a sense of common memory. His unexpected use of patterns taps into the mediums nostalgic familiarity, striving to import a sense of history and story within each piece. “A lot of times, I’ll see a pattern on a piece of linoleum in my studio, and I’ll see a face in that”, says Miller of his work, “I’ll see the shape, the color, the gesture in a piece. I love it when I find the 30’s and 40’s stuff, with its old floral prints. It’s so powerful.” Miller began working with recycled materials as a founding member of Pittsburgh’s Industrial Arts Co-Op constructing large-scale sculptures made of scrap materials in abandoned industrial sites.
