In his exhibition FROZEN LATITUDE 64°S x 60°E FROZEN LONGITUDE 60°N x 94°W Colin Finlay continues his fascination with the Arctic and Antarctic frontiers to create an entirely new body of work . Finlay first made the images for his ICE series in 2007, and now six years later, he has re-visualized the molecular structure of his original imagery. Finlay sees this new body of work in defiance of the cookie- cutter photoshop aesthetic he calls "Guitar Hero Photography". "I felt that the end of the cul de sac had been reached, that I needed to bring my hands back, my physical hands back to what was once the craft of photography," says Finlay. "I began almost two years ago, and what you see on the walls before you is the manifestation of that process. They are multi layered -- with as few as four passes -- to as many as twelve layers of stratified acrylic and oil to create the final re-envision of the original photographic image." Colin Finlay is one of the foremost documentary photographers in the world. He has been awarded the prestigious Picture of the Year International (POYi) honor six times. For almost twenty five years, Finlay has documented the human condition with compassion, empathy and dignity. He has covered war and conflict, disappearing traditions, the environment in both its glory and its devastation, genocide, famine, religious pilgrimage and global cultures. In pursuit of his passion, he has circled the globe twenty-seven times, in search of that one photo that will be a testament to the depth of human will and compassion, of hope and of an informed collective consciousness. His work has been honored by prestigious organizations such as the Lucie Award/IPA, POYi (Picture of the Year International), New York Art Directors, Photo District News (PDN), Applied Arts, International Center for Photography, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. His photographs have been featured in Vanity Fair, TIME, U.S. News and World Report, American Photo, Los Angeles Times Magazine, Asia Week, World Health Organization, UNICEF, Photographic Magazine, Communication Arts and Discovery. Finlay's first book, "The Unheard Voice, Portraits of Childhood", was published in 1996. It is a black and white collection of images of children caught in the midst of conflict. “Testify”, published in 2006, is a body of work which comprises seventeen years of his photojournalism work from around the globe, which won 1st place "Book of the Year" from POYi. “Darfur: Twenty Years of War and Genocide in Sudan”, was published in July 2007 by powerHouse. Co-produced with Proof and Amnesty International, this book brings to light the history of war by eight world-renowned photographers and writers. Co-founded by Finlay, Proof is a non-profit organization established to create awareness on the issues faced by populations in post-conflict societies and to encourage social change through photography. In 2007, Finlay premiered "12°N x 23° E, 64°S x 60° E", an accordion-fold book that features contrasts between photographs taken in South Sudan and Antarctica. The project, which was also produced as a large art installation piece, was designed by Marta Salas-Porras. The book shows cause and effect and allows the viewer to explore and discover their own conclusions on climate change. In 2011, Finlay collaborated with Dorka Keehn to photograph "Eco Amazons: 20 Women Who Are Transforming the World", published by powerHouse. Finlay’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the George Eastman House, J. Paul Getty Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, LACMA and MOCA.
